Mall of America

The Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in North America, was constructed by Triple Five Group, but it is property of the Ghermezian brothers of Canada. This beautifully created mall is situated on the former side of the stadium formerly used for the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins until 1982.

In later years, the Ghermezian organization signed an agreement with The Bloomington Port Authority for construction of the mall, which began on June 14, 1989. Other big organizations like the Teachers Insurance and Annuity, Melvin Simon and Associates, the office of architect Jon Jerde and the Triple Five Group were also involved. This fabulous building opened its doors to the public on August 11, 1992. Since then, the Mall of America acquired many other names, such as The Megamall, Megamess, Hugedale, and Sprawl of America.

The Mall of America has a total area of 4.2 million square feet (390,000 sq. m.), 2.5 million square feet (230,000 sq. m.) of which is occupied by retail shops. It is a nearly symmetrical building, with a rectangular floor plan. It boasts 520 stores located on three levels. Each floor is divided in four zones. After the completion of the north side of the mall, the total number of stores will increase to 900.
