The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is a famous art museum situated in the Whittier neighborhood. The museum covers approximately 8 acres (3.2 hectares) formerly known as Morrison Park. It has no entrance fee, but one may have to spend a few dollars to see some special exhibitions. Photography is allowed in each of the exhibits. The museum has the support of the county museum fund, organized by the Hennepin County commissioners.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts features a rare collection of nearly 100,000 objects covering 5000 years of world history. The collection includes photographs, prints, paintings, drawings, textiles, decorative arts, and architecture. The museum features art from Oceania , Africa, and the Americas, as well as an Asian art collection that is known as one of the finest and most comprehensive in the country". The Asian collection inclues Chinese architecture, jades, bronzes, and ceramics.
Purcell-Cutts House, the largest item in the collection, is the best example of Prairie School architecture. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts restored the building at its original address and opened its door to the public in 1990. In order to grow its own private collection and help in the acquisition of famous works of art, the museum created “Curatorial Councils”. The institution runs many programs for the exhibitions as well.
