Minneapolis

minneapolis

Known as the City of Lakes, Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota. Minneapolis is located on the banks of two rivers, the Mississippi and the Minnesota. The city contains many beautiful lakes, wetlands, creeks, waterfalls, and the Mississippi riverfront and waterfalls. Many waterfalls are connected by parkways in sequence through the scenic byways and lakes. Minneapolis was originally a hub of flour milling and timber. It is very important for trade as it acts as a bridge among cities like Chicago and Seattle.

Minneapolis is well-known for its literacy, attracting ingenious actors, artists, writers, and musicians. The local community is quite diverse and is given a great deal of financial support through public social programs and private and commercial philanthropy. The name Minneapolis signifies the first schoolmaster of the city, who combined the polis, the Greek word for city, and min, the Dakota Indian word for water.

Minneapolis is historically and economically tied to water. The city lies on an artesian aquifer and flat terrain. Six percent of the 58.4 square mile (151.3 sq. km.) area of the city is water. The management of water is taken care of by watershed districts that correspond to the city's three creeks. Three large ponds, twelve lakes, and five nameless wetlands are within Minneapolis.
