Minnesota Historical Society

The Minnesota Historical Society, a non-profit, private, cultural and educational institution is committed to preserving the history of Minnesota. The society was founded by the territorial legislature and named in the Constitution of Minnesota in 1849.
The society boasts of possession and complete management control over 26 museums and historic places, some of which are located within the Minnesota state parks. Nowadays, it possesses approximately 37,000 maps, 550,000 books, 165,000 historical artifacts, 250,000 photographs, 38,000 cubic feet (1100 cubic meters) of manuscripts, 800,000 archaeological items, 45,000 cubic feet (1300 cubic meters) of government records, drawings, 5500 paintings, prints, and 1300 moving image items. All of these items, worth $76.4 million, are stored in the History Center situated in Minnesota's capital, St. Paul.
Some famous places in the society include the Birch Coulee Battlefield, the Comstock House, the Folsom House, the Forest History Center, Fort Ridgely, Historic Forestville, the Jeffers Petroglyphs, the Charles A. Lindbergh House, the WW Mayo House, and the Minnesota State Capitol.
