The Minnesota State Capitol is situated Saint Paul, the capitol city of Minnesota. It is home of the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives, the Office of the Governor, and the Office of the Attorney General. The building consists of a chamber for the Supreme Court of Minnesota, although court activities are generally organized in the adjoining Minnesota Judicial Center.
The building was modeled after Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome and designed by Cass Gilbert. The unsupported marble dome is the second largest dome in the world.
Construction of the building was completed in 1905. The original capitol building burned down in 1881. The second building was too small, so it was reconstructed a third time.
The southern gate consists of a gilded quadriga statue, designed by Edward Clark Potter and Daniel Chester French. In 1995, the statue was restored.
The original cost of the capitol was $4.5 million. The building was open to the public on January 2, 1905. Nearly one hundred years later, the building's approximate value was $400 million. As a part of its centennial celebrations in 2005, lawmakers anticipated to gain support and funds for a projected $65 million renovation project. The capitol was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
