Nicollet Mall, a section of Nicollet Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, is an important locale of cultural and commercial activities. This place is a fashionable dining and shopping district made to attract the white-collar workers who make up most of the downtown daytime community of Minneapolis. Many eminent offices like the IDS Center and departmental stores like Neiman Marcus and Macy’s are situated in the mall. It also includes the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, the Orchestra Hall (close to the Warehouse District), the Minneapolis Public Library, and the Minneapolis Convention Center.
The mall has wide sidewalks that create a very friendly atmosphere for pedestrians. Bicycles are prohibited except during weekday rush hours.
Nicollet Mall is only 11 blocks long, but Nicollet Avenue is quite stretched out in the city. Nicollet Mall, Nicolett Avenue, and many other places in Minneapolis were named after Joseph Nicollet, a map maker and a French explorer.
Today, the huge intersection of Nicollet and Hennepin is gone. Nicollet Avenue now ends at Washington Avenue as it was cut back to some extent. Northwestern National Life Insurance, now known as ING, designed by Minoru Yamasaki, architect of the World Trade Center in New York City, is situated at the end of Nicollet. A modest park was renovated on this site, and a flagpole still exists there, which is old Gateway Park’s last remnant. Dayton's department store is situated on the south end of the mall, just across the IDS store.
