Summit Avenue

Summit Avenue, a street in Saint Paul, is famous for its historic churches, houses, schools and synagogues. The street begins west of downtown and continues westward for nearly four miles (7 km) to the Mississippi River. Other cities have similar streets, like Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Prairie Avenue in Chicago, Fifth Avenue in New York City, and Park Avenue in Minneapolis. Summit Avenue has a preserved mix of buildings and historic character and it still holds the title of the best-preserved example of a Victorian residential boulevard.

This street lies between two special historic districts. Summit Hill, also known as Crocus Hill, lies south of Summit Avenue and expands along the bluffs to Lexington Avenue. Most of the homes on the avenue are very large and were distinctively built between 1890 and 1920. Ramsey Hill is positioned north of Summit Hill and includes the James J. Hill House, the Cathedral of Saint Paul, and Laurel Terrace.

Two different districts, Historic Hill District and Marshall Avenue, are included in this area and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some famous buildings on this street include the Cathedral of Saint Paul, the James J. Hill House, the Burbank-Livingston-Griggs House, the F. Scott Fitzgerald House, the Minnesota Governor's Residence, the Pierce and Walter Butler House, the University of St. Thomas, Dr. Ward Beebe's House, and the Saint Paul Seminary.
