Ulrich Architecture and Design Center

ulrich architecture and design gallery

The Ulrich Architecture and Design Center is a gallery concentrating on metalwork, furniture, glass, and ceramics. This museum is the most diverse and the largest of its kind in the world. It consists of nearly 10,000 works from Europe and America, from the middle Ages to the present.

Apart from the creative 1915 building constructed by Mead, McKim and White, the best acknowledged example of architecture of the MIA is the Purcell-Cutts House (1913), which is a Prairie School gem constructed by George Grant Elmslie and William Purcell for the Purcell family.

Furnishing and architecture were done by Louis Sullivan, Purcell Elmslie, George Washington Maher, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
The house was converted to a museum in 1985 by Anson Cutts, Jr. who was the house's second owner’s son. Situated in the center of Minneapolis, it is open to the public on specific weekends.

A recent important gift bestowed to the museum is the Norwest Modernism Collection, which comprises approximately 500 works in all media, documenting some of the most important workings of six modernist movements. Since this donation was given in 1998, the collection has been presented in a series of exhibitions at the museum and at the Wells Fargo Center. The award-winning Modernism website displays these works online.

The Bell Family Decorative Arts Court features an impressive 18th century American silver collection bestowed by James Ford Bell.
