Walker Art Center

walker art center

The Walker Art Center is a modern art museum situated in Minneapolis. It was designed by lumberman Thomas Barlow Walker in 1879 and was founded at its present location in 1927. It was the first public art gallery ever opened in the Upper Midwest. The main attention of the museum shifted to modern art in 1940. The modern art collection was a gift from Mrs. Gilbert Walker, which included works by key artists and sculptors of the day, including Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore and many others.

The Walker Art Center is spread over 17 acres (6.9 hectares) of urban area, which includes two buildings as well as surrounding parks. The north wing, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, was inaugurated in 1971. An expansion of this building that doubled its size in 2005 was created by Herzog & de Meuron. This expansion enabled the museum to open new galleries, a big theater and a restaurant. The Walker Art Center is a multidisciplinary institution which includes performing arts, programming in visual arts, film and video, design and new media, and community and educational programs.

The Walker Art Center collection includes works from Chuck Close, Matthew Barney, Roy Lichtenstein, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, and Andy Warhol.
