Emerald Mound

emerald mound

One of the most noteworthy archeological sites in Mississippi, the Emerald Mound is located along the Natchez Trace Parkway and is the second largest ritual mound in the USA. This 35 feet high earthen structure spread on 8 acres of land and having a flat top was designated as a National Historic Landmark in the year 1989. Two smaller mounds are present at each end and the Emerald Mound site is understood to have hosted several ceremonies and rituals between 1250 and 1600 A.D.

Believed to have been built by ancestors of Natchez Indians, through a tedious process of depositing earth around a natural hill, this massive artificial plateau is truly a spectacular sight. Known as the Selzertown site, excavations since 1838 have unearthed several interesting relics and remnants such as ceramic pieces, tools and animal remains among others. Excavations also reveal that the site was abandoned by the Natchez on account of a series of diseases that spread in the region.

Tourists can climb atop the Emerald Mound to get a magnificent view of the surroundings. The lovely environs add to the majesty of the mound and make for a great background. Even amateurs can click away some stunning pictures.
