Spread over 137,000 acres, the Gulf Islands National Seashore is a mammoth national park along the Gulf of Mexico and comprises of clusters of barrier islands and seaside mainland.
The Gulf Islands National Seashore extends over 150 miles and includes portions of southern Mississippi and northwestern Florida. Open all year round this tourist destination offers ample water based recreational activities, with kayaking, canoeing, surfing and water skiing being the most popular.

Additionally there are several historic sites and forts such as Fort Pickens in Florida and Fort Massachusetts in Mississippi. These interesting structures along the shoreline add educational value to the visit.

A wide range of plants thrive in the region as there are diverse habitats that support different plant species. From Live Oaks in the mainland forest to wetland plants in the salt marsh region and from aquatic grass beds in the bay segment to the towering pines in the forest marsh, this national park holds a treasure of flora. Also, abundant animal life including mammals, birds, and reptiles thrive in the National Park. As several endangered species have made it their home, visitors are asked to view them from a distance.

Gulf Islands National Seashore is about 10 miles offshore from Mississippi District and is accessible only by boat. Excursion trips operate from the Mississippi end in all seasons except winter.
