House on Ellicott's Hill

house on ellicott's hill

In the historic city of Natchez, Mississippi, where street after street is decorated with structures that are undoubtedly rare architectural gems, find one such ancient marvel - the House on Ellicott's Hill. Built by a wealthy merchant named James Moore in the year 1798, this building on Canal Street gets its name from Major Andre Ellicott, who in the year 1797 defied Spanish regulation and hoisted the American National flag – a first for the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Acquired by the Natchez Garden Club in 1934, the restoration process was carried out under the guidance of architect Richard Koch from New Orleans and thus making it the first building ever to be restored in the City of Natchez. With its furnishings dating back to the period of its construction, the interiors are truly elegant.

The two-storey House on Ellicott's Hill is designed in the lines of a western frontier home and finds place in the National Register of Historic Places. Several renovation tasks are being carried out, to preserve internal furnishings and fittings along with the external beauty of this extraordinary home. The first mayor of Natchez - Samuel Brooks and Dr. Frederick Seip - Philadelphia who established the Natchez Hospital are among the reputed tenants.

The House on Ellicott's Hill is also important on account of being located right on the terminus of the nationally acclaimed Natchez Trace Pathway.
