Longwood

longwood

A National Historic Landmark, the Longwood mansion in Natchez, Mississippi has a mysterious look and feel surrounding it. This antebellum home with an onion shaped dome was designed by renowned architect Samuel Sloan for Dr. Haller Nutt, a wealthy cotton planter. Nicknamed as Nutt’s Folly, the construction of the octagonal structure inspired by the Oriental Style – specifically an Arabian Palace commenced in 1860 and was stopped unexpectedly in 1861 when the workers rushed into the American Civil War.

Initially designed to have thirty-two rooms, only nine were done and even in 1864 when Dr. Nutt passed away, the mansion was still incomplete as against the anticipated plan. However visitors a century ago and even today vouch for the luxurious interiors, affluent look and classy beautification. The most memorable part of the internal adornment is the drawings of the original mansion as visualized by the architect, a six floor building complete with marble flooring. Rooms in the basement hold some beautiful artwork.

After being occupied by the descendants of Dr. Nutt, the Longwood mansion was eventually handed over to the Pilgrimage Garden Club in 1970 and is under its careful maintenance, ever since.

Longwood’s arresting external appearance is its biggest hallmark, with the clear blues skies in combination with moss dripped forest trees adding to its charisma and mystery - a picture that has decked postcards for decades. Open to tourists, Longwood Mansion is a must visit for anyone who touches upon Natchez.
