Though the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum survived the terrible Hurricane Camille, it was greatly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Except for the two schooner replicas which were partly dented, the other exhibits and the building itself were packed down. The below description is about the museum in its past glory.
Located in Biloxi, Mississippi, the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum sheds light on the maritime history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and development of the seafood industry in the region. Established in 1986, the museum was housed in a 1930 built former Coast Guard barracks had a wide range of displays of charter boats, wooden boat building, marine blacksmithing, wetlands, management of marine resources, shrimp peeling machine, netmaking, Biloxi skiff and other maritime resources among others.
To bring in participation from all quarters, especially youth, and to educate them about the local maritime heritage, the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum even today organizes the popular summer Sea-n-Sail Adventure Camp. The museum’s annual wooden boat show that showcased historic and antique wooden boats was also a big draw.
Seafood industry in Biloxi has grown from strength to strength and the museum has numerous unique artifacts that charter the course of the development and progress of this multi-million dollar segment.
The gift shop which housed some interesting stuff now operates at the Schooner Pier and gifts can be ordered online at https://www.maritimemuseum.org/gifts.shtml
