Melrose Plantation

melrose plantation

One of the prized possessions of the historic City of Natchez – Mississippi, Melrose Plantation State Historic Site comprises of a stunning mansion built in 1847 and two slave houses situated in what was an erstwhile prosperous cotton plantation.

Owned by John McMurran, a native of Pennsylvania, the construction of the Greek revival style mansion took eight long years and was occupied by the owners from 1849 to 1883. Jane Johnson and Alice Sims, former slaves in the mansion cared for the property until their death in the 1940’s. Eventually in 1990 the plantation property was purchased by the National Park Service and is now open for tours.

The plush interiors of the mansion are the most talked about aspect of the Melrose Plantation Mansion. From the rich silk drapes, the wooden silk-trimmed Venetian blinds, the stylish bells to summon the slaves, the attractive paintings and photographs to the classy wedding gown of Mary Elizabeth McMurran, every item in the house speaks volumes about the wealth and riches enjoyed by the owners.

The slave homes in the backyard are minimalist to the core and paint a contrasting picture. The modest kitchen, tool house and livestock area included in the slave quarters can all be visited.

The plantation gardens with numerous flowering plants and fruit orchards coupled with the gentle rolling hills, grass carpeted lawns surrounding the Mansion make for a great view.
