Mississippi State Capitol

mississippi state capitol

Mississippi’s Capital city, Jackson, is home to the majestic State Capitol building that accommodates the Mississippi Legislature. Built in 1903 under architectural guidance from renowned St. Louis architect, Theodore Link, Mississippi State Capitol also called as New Capitol is designed on the Beaux Arts Classicism architectural style. The State Capitol building was renovated from 1979 to 1983 at a cost of about 18 million and the immaculately restored structure was re-opened on June 3rd 1983.

Today, the Mississippi State Capitol building is a sight to behold. Its striking walls made of Bedford limestone with Georgia Granite used for the base, give it a royal look. The main vestibule has the stunning Blue Vermont marble with Black Belgian for its base. However the major attraction is the gigantic dome which is about 180 feet from basement and has a gold leaf coated eagle right on the top.

The interiors are also equally attractive with the Governor's Office being the most captivating area inside the Capitol building. Here the intricate molded mantle, the restored fireplace and the orderly woodwork make it extremely well turned-out. Both the house and the Senate floor have carpets woven in Greenville, with the original 1903 patterns being retained.

The neatly manicured grounds surrounding the Capitol building have replicas of the Liberty Bell, several trees including the state tree – magnolia and the figurehead from the second USS Mississippi battleship among others.

A Mississippi Landmark building, Mississippi State Capitol is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places and open to the public even when the legislature sessions are on.
