Natchez Trace Parkway

natchez trace parkway

A trail that has captivated generations of travelers runs from Natchez town in the State of Mississippi passing through sections of the Mississippi River, Alabama, and central Tennessee before ending at Nashville, Tennessee.

From Native Americans such as the Chickasaws to the French, Spanish and American explorers, everyone is believed to have taken this route. To remember this 444 mile worn out path that was treaded by thousands of travelers despite the perils of bandits and dangerous wildlife, the route was converted into the Natchez Trace Parkway functional under the National Park Service in the year 1938.

Once nicknamed as the"Devil's Backbone”, the Natchez Trace Parkway route today is a haven for hikers, horse-riders and bikers. The drive across this wilderness stretch is truly memorable as it takes tourists close to the wonderful natural surroundings in the region. Wildflowers that thrive in the parkway section are a treat to the eyes as more than 100 species of colorful and eye-catching flora cover the expanse. Natchez Trace Parkway is also known for its excellent camping facilities and picturesque picnicking spots.

Other places of interest added to the parkway are the Ackia Battleground National Monument or Chickasaw Village and the Meriwether Lewis National Monument, which has the grave of Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clarke trail. Named as an “All American Road” in the year 1995, Natchez Trace Parkway is a wonderful way to discover the historic significance and the natural splendor of this landscape and territory.
