The Old Capitol Museum in Jackson, Mississippi is the most important historical state landmark.
Inaugurated in 1839 as the State Capitol, this majestic structure designed by renowned Bath England architect, William Nichols, operated in the above capacity until 1903. Subsequently it housed government offices until 1917 when it was abandoned. However the eye-catching Greek revival style architecture and grandeur of this building which is truly captivating prompted the government to undertake its restoration and then convert it into a museum in 1961.
Ever since its transformation to a museum, the Old Capitol Museum of Mississippi History has grown into one of the most acclaimed museums showcasing the history of Mississippi. From the Native Americans who once inhabited Mississippi, the flourishing cotton agriculture and the impact of Civil War the museum has displays that cover every aspect of the life in Mississippi since 1500. The museum also has on display the highly acclaimed Jefferson Davis memorabilia collection. The dioramas and exhibits tracing the political history of Jackson are also among the major attractions in the museum.
A must for history buffs and all those interested in the evolution of present day Mississippi.
Note: Since the Old Capitol Museum of Mississippi History was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, it is currently closed and is expected to open in 2009.
