The remains of a magnificent mansion built in the pre-Civil War period, by a wealthy planter named Smith Coffee Daniell, II, are today one of the most important landmarks on the banks of Mississippi river. Designed by David Shroder, the Windsor Manor was built with great care between 1859 and 1861, with 29 striking columns each 45 feet tall, contributed to the grandeur of the structure, and formed the key external attraction.
Built at an estimated cost of USD 175,000, this four storey building had 25 rooms, each with a fireplace and rich interiors. The roof top observatory is believed to have been a favorite of legendary author Mark Twain, who used it to view the Mississippi River. This stunning Windsor Manor once hosted some of the biggest parties and greatest cultural events and was considered to be the symbol
Today 23 imposing columns and a wrought iron staircase are what remain after a devastating fire broke out in 1890 destroying every inch of this Greek revival home that earlier withstood even the Civil War. These tall columns standing erect against the clear blue skies bring out a sense of awe and wonder. The splendor of what is left leaves one wondering about the actual beauty of the mansion in its totality.
Situated in Claiborne County, Ruins of Windsor are one of the biggest attractions to adorn the landscape of Mississippi and visitors to the site are bound to be struck by the mystic look of the remains.
