Three museums located in the premises of the University of Mississippi, namely the Buie Museum, Skipwith Museum, and Walton-Young Historic House collectively constitute the University Museums.
- Mary Buie Museum: Inaugurated in 1939, this museum has a breathtaking fine arts collection and historical exhibits. There are over 11,000 items in the exhibits including acclaimed antiques in the form of fine art, dolls and folk art, all bringing alive the history and the social conditions of the past. Artifacts and memorabilia belonging to the Skipwith family who partially funded the museum operations are included in the display.
The popular David M. Robinson Collection exceeds 2000 items and includes a wide range of Roman and Greek sculptures, Greek vases dating back to several centuries, and other artifacts, such as lamps, terracotta’s and coins, among others. The Millington – Barnard collection that consists of scientific apparatus pertaining to the nineteenth-century is another major draw.
- Kate Skipwith Teaching Museum: Built in 1977 as an additional wing, the Kate Skipwith Teaching Museum has the biggest collection of the works of Theora Hamblett, a primeval artist whose paitings find place in several museums across the state and nation.
- Walton-Young Historic House: Built in 1880 by Horace H. Walton, an Oxford resident, this home is a Mississippi Landmark that depicts the architecture of the Victorian era. Subsequently the residence of the well known playwright and novelist Dr. Alfred Alexander Young who was married to Walton’s daughter, the structure gained historic importance. Acquired by the University in 1974, and included in the University Museum in 1997, the original appearance is intact with the interiors and furnishings featuring the period lifestyle.
Additionally, two galleries, The Seymour Lawrence and Porter and Elizabeth Fortune, were added to the exhibition section in 1998. The University Museums host a number of interesting cultural and historic events all year long in association with other departments.
