Vicksburg National Military Park

vicksburg national military park

The Battle of Vicksburg has a significant place in the history of the American Civil War as it enabled the Union to get control of the complete Mississippi River belt. The city of Vicksburg in Mississippi is home to the exact site where the Siege of Vicksburg took place on July 4, 1863, after a grim battle that waged for 47 days since May 18, 1863. The Vicksburg National Military Park built on the erstwhile fortress is a tribute to the crusade and the subsequent siege of the Vicksburg stronghold.

Named as a National Park in 1899 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 visitors today can view the battlefield site, a National Cemetery, about 1325 vital monuments and markers, articles like cookware and medicines, armory, and the acclaimed ironclad USS Cairo river Gunboat among others. Spread over nearly 1800 acres (7.2 sq. km.), the park premises also include the 115-acre (46-hectare) Vicksburg National cemetery holding more than 18000 interments.

The visitor center is ideal to start the trip of Vicksburg National Military Park as volunteers explain the history of the site and what to expect in the tour ahead. Additionally a short film and displays on the history of the Civil War familiarizes the tourists with the political and social conditions in that age. Find a 16-mile (26-km) tour route that conveniently covers all the major sites within the park.
