The chief tourist attraction in Jefferson City, Missouri - the Missouri State Capitol is located overlooking the spectacular Missouri River and houses the state government offices. However, the appeal of this structure comes from the fact that its striking exteriors are perfectly complimented by its majestic interiors and together they make the Capitol building an architectural marvel and an artistic delight.
Also, housed in the State Capitol building is the renowned Missouri State Museum which boasts of a remarkable collection of historical and cultural exhibits. The most famous and most adored display is undoubtedly “The Social History of the State of Missouri” – a mural by Thomas Hart Benton dating back to 1936.
The history of the present Missouri State Capitol, which is the third structure to function as the Capitol, is interesting. The first Capitol constructed in 1826 was destroyed by a fire, while the second building operated from 1840 to 1911, when it was struck by a lightning, damaging the dome. It was then that the residents of Missouri erected the present grand building spread over 3 acres. Made of Missouri limestone marble called Carthage, the rotundas, the exteriors, the floors and the corridors of the Roman Renaissance style creation are breathtakingly beautiful to say the least. A bronze statue of Ceres – the goddess of grain adorns the capitol dome.
The gleaming white Missouri State Capitol with captivating backdrops is picture perfect and no doubt has adorned thousands of post cards and print publications.
