Pony Express Museum

pony express museum

The Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, has great significance in the national transport history as it was from here that the first fast mail line started operations in April 1860. The mail commenced its run from the banks of the Missouri River and reached up to the Pacific coast, operating in times of turmoil and difficult natural conditions. The Pony Express Museum captures the origin, growth and the decline of this legendary service that aimed to bridge the gap between the people living in different parts of the United States.

Pony Express Museum started in 1950’s in the historical Pikes Peak Stables – the exact location from where the first horse carrying mail commenced its journey. The museum was renovated again in 1993 and several other original stables were reconstructed. Today, the Pony Express Museum has a wide range of exhibits that take visitors though the dramatic journey of this celebrated mail service.

The interpretive exhibits in the museum beautifully recreate the magic of the Pony Express era. The museum also organizes a range of educative tours for students and adults all year round. Also, there is a community hall that can be used for corporate meetings and get-togethers and a gift shop with charming souvenirs.
