Shepherd of the Hills Homestead

shepherd of the hills homestead

The Shepherd of the Hills is an epic novel that changed the way the world looked at Branson – Missouri. Written by Kansas resident Mr. Harold Bell Wright, the novel was inspired by the lives of John and Anna Ross, a friendly couple who gave the author shelter in their Branson homestead. Wright’s description of the spectacular views of the Ozarks Mountains and the picturesque setting for the novel bought Branson into limelight. Since its publication in 1907, the serene homestead of the Ross couple witnessed a large influx of tourists who wished to experience the location in person.

Today, tourists can tour the homestead and visit the original Old Matt's Cabin, the awesome Inspiration Point and Inspiration Tower, savor the spectacular views from various stretches in the homestead, admire the statues of the six main characters of the novel and explore the reconstructed Morgan Community Church among others.

The most exhilarating experience however is to watch the immortal play enacted at the Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Theatre. Starting in 1960’s the outdoor enactment of the Shepherd of Hills has enthralled one and all. Complete with a flock of sheep, over 40 horses, a burning log cabin, and about 80 actors, the stage comes alive with action, drama and emotions and the legendary story eternally stays in the hearts of everyone watching it.
