18th & Vine Heritage District

The 18th & Vine Heritage District, situated in Kansas City, Missouri, is home to the two major trademarks of Kansas City, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum. These museums bring back the memories of the Kansas City’s cultural life. They offer the visitors a unique opportunity to have a glimpse of some of the greatest legends of baseball and jazz music, such as James “Cool Papa” Bell, Charlie Parker, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, George and Julia Lee, and Lester Young.

Other attractions at the Heritage District include the Gem Theater Cultural and Performing Arts Center and the Horace M. Peterson III Visitor Center. The former is considered to be an added jewel in the crown of 18th & Vine District. Established in 1912 as a movie house for African-Americans, the Gem Theater has been now transformed into a 500-seat cultural and performing arts center for theatrical and music performances.

The Horace M. Peterson III Visitor Center, on the other hand, highlights the significant contributions made by the 18th & Vine area to the social, cultural, and economic development of the city. The Visitors Center features an audio-visual presentation on the African-American experience in the area. The District is also home to the Mutual Musicians Foundation, the offices of The Call, an African-American Newspaper; the Blue Room Jazz Club; the Historic Lincoln Building; and several historic restaurants and apartments. The 18th & Vine Heritage District is the perfect place to experience the cultural heritage of the Kansas City and is well worth a visit.
