The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum situated in the 18th & Vine District of Kansas City, Missouri, was established in 1900. Today, the museum is the premier center of African-American cultural activity in Kansas City during the early 20th century. It aims at preserving the Negro League Baseball culture, which is gradually fading away from the realm of consciousness for the public.
The progress of the Negro Leagues is chronologically depicted at the Museum by means of interactive exhibits and informative placards. The walls of the Museum feature rare pictures of owners, players, and officials of the Negro League Baseball, from the Negro National League of 1920 through the Negro American League that lasted until 1960. Besides, the Museum also exhibits game-worn uniforms, gloves, cleats, and several other artifacts from stars like Josh Gibson, the “Black Babe Ruth”. A fascinating photo gallery; a multi-screen video presentation in which former players talk about what it was like to play in the Negro Leagues; artifacts illustrating the coaching tips; and other interactive videos are all a part of the Museum.
The most impressive exhibit at the Museum is the ‘Field of Legends’, which is accessible only towards the end of the tour. The field is adorned by the life-sized bronze statues of 12 figures from the Negro League History, including Rube Foster, the founder of the Negro National League; Buck O’Neil, a former Kansas City monarch; Satchel Paige, the most famous Negro Leaguer of all time; Gibson, one of the most prolific hitters in baseball history; and Martin Dihigo, the only man to be inducted into the Halls of Fame in three countries: Mexico, Cuba, and the United States. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum re-establishes the look, sound, and the feel of baseball in the height of the Negro Leagues, and is a ‘must-see’ for all those who visit the city.
