Nelson-Atkins Art Museum

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, situated in Kansas City, Missouri, is one of the best art museums in the country. It is internationally acclaimed for its extensive collection of over 33, 500 objects and offers the visitors a unique opportunity to understand and explore the civilization through the eyes of craftsmen, sculptors, painters, and several other artists. Designed by renowned Kansas City architects Wight and Wight, the museum building is well known for its classical Beaux-Arts architecture style. The Museum was opened to the public on December 11, 1933. Until 1983, the west wing and lobby of the museum were together referred to as the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, while the east wing was called the Atkins Museum of Fine Arts.
The highly-prized European painting collection at the Museum includes impressive works by Caravaggio, Claude Monet, Titian, El Greco, and Rembrandt. The Museum is also well known for its outstanding collection of Asian art, particularly that of Imperial China. The collection also comprises of pieces from India, Japan, Korea, Iran, and South Asia. The American painting collection, on the other hand, features the largest collection of works by Thomas Hart Benton, Winslow Homer, and Frederick Church. Besides, the Museum also holds the entire Hallmark Photographic Collection donated by the Hallmarks Cards Chairman Donald J. Hall, Sr.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art also houses a collection of American and European sculpture, Egyptian art, Greek and Roman Art, decorative arts and works on paper, pre-Columbian art, contemporary arts and paintings, and a large collection of English poetry and miniature paintings. The Kansas City Sculpture Park, situated on the museum’s immense lawn, features the largest collection of monumental bronzes by Henry Moore; Shuttlecocks, a four-part outdoor steel sculpture of oversize badminton shuttlecocks; and other works by George Segal, Alexander Calder, and Mark di Suvero.
