The Missouri Botanical Garden, popularly known as the “Shaw Garden” after its founder Henry Shaw, is situated at Shaw Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1859, it is considered to be one of the America’s oldest botanical institutions. It has also been designated a National Historic Landmark. Today, the Missouri Botanical garden serves as a primer center for science education and botanical research of international repute. It features nearly 79 acres (0.31 sq-km) of horticultural display and is undoubtedly a serene retreat from the hubbub of the routine life in St. Louis.
Located right next to the famous Tower Grove Park, the Botanical Garden is home to Seiwa-en, a 14 acre (0.05 sq-km) Japanese strolling garden; Henry Shaw’s original 1850 estate home; Osage Camp; the Climatron geodesic dome conservatory; and a children’s garden. The children’s garden features a playground, a pioneer village, a water locking system, and a fountain area. Other major features of the Missouri Botanical Garden include the Blanke Boxwood Garden, a walled parterre with an outstanding boxwood collection; the English Woodland Garden, home to a number of plant species, including aconite, bluebells, dogwoods, azaleas, and trillium; Linnaean House, the original Shaw’s orangerie and the oldest continually operated greenhouse west of the Mississippi River; Gladney Rose Garden, a circular rose garden with arbors; Grigg Nanjing Friendship Chinese Garden, featuring the Chinese scholar’s rocks from Tai Hu, gifts from sister city Nanjing, a lotus gate, and a moon gate; and the Victory of Science over Ignorance, a marble statue sculpted by Carlo Nicoli.
The Botanical Garden also hosts a number of cultural festivals every year. The Chinese Culture Days and the Japanese Festival are organized by the St. Louis Chinese Culture Days Committee. During these festivals, many culture’s botanics and a wide variety of crafts, cultural arts, music, and food is put on display. The Japanese Festival also features a number of interesting events, including sumo wrestling, kimono fashion, and taiko drumming. The Gardens also play host to marriage receptions, private parties, and events.
The Missouri Botanical Garden is also internationally acclaimed for its Bonsai growing that can be observed all year round, especially during the Asian Festivals. The Graden premises also house an elegant gift shop and a restaurant with patio dining. The water lily reflection ponds and the ‘William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening’ in the Botanical Garden are also noteworthy. The Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the most popular attractions in St. Louis and should not to be missed at any cost.
