The Missouri History Museum, situated in Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri, is currently housed in the magnificent Jefferson Memorial Building and is managed by the Missouri Historical Society. The Emerson Center, designed by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, was added to the museum building in the year 2000 in order to increase exhibition capacity. Today, this center houses a huge auditorium, spacious classrooms, a fine restaurant, and an elegant gift shop.
Originally established in 1866, the Missouri History Museum is well-known for its outstanding collections and exhibits. The museum’s permanent collection comprises of a wide range of artifacts pertaining to the history of the nation, emphasizing more on the rich cultural past of Missouri and St. Louis. Some of the major exhibits include the local colonial and native artifacts, relics relating to Charles Lindbergh and his trans-Atlantic flight in the “Spirit of St. Louis”, and the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition artifacts. Several artifacts from the Lewis and Clark Expedition have also been included in the museum’s permanent collection.
The latest traveling exhibits and events hosted by the museum include the Lewis and Clark National Bicentennial Exhibition, the Road to Freedom tour, and a large amount of artifacts related to the restoration and renovation of the Fox Theater. Some of the other major exhibits put on display in the Museum include the ‘1904 World’s Fair’ and ‘Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World’. The Missouri History Museum is a great learning experience and is a must-see for all those who are interested in knowing more about the history of the state.
