The Saint Louis Art Museum, situated in Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri, is one of the primary art museums in the United States. It attracts nearly a half million people annually and offers free admission to all. The museum was formerly housed in a three-story building, which was established as the Palace of the Fine Arts for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, popularly known as the 1904 World’s Fair. Designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert, the architectural style of this magnificent museum building was inspired by the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, Italy. Following the 1904 World's Fair, the museum was relocated to its present-day home in Forest Park.
The Saint Louis Art Museum is best known for its outstanding collection, comprising of over 30,000 art works from the distant past to the present. Besides, the museum also offers a number of rotating exhibitions and installations, including regular exhibitions of works on paper, textiles, and new media art, and the current series that present the works of several contemporary artists. The museum’s collection is broadly categorized into eleven distinct areas: African, American, Asian, Contemporary, Ancient & Islamic, Decorative Arts & Design, Early European, Pre-Columbian & American Indian, Modern, Oceanic, and Prints, Drawings, & Photographs. The museum’s extensive collections of Turkish rugs and Oceanic & Pre-Columbian artifacts are considered to be the finest in the world. Other popular exhibits at the Museum include the Egyptian Mummy, the world’s largest Max Beckmann collections, and an extensive collection of 20th century German paintings.
The Saint Louis Art Museum is also home to the Richardson Memorial Library, the largest center for the history and documentation of art in the Midwest; and a Resource Center, which holds a comprehensive loan collection of educational materials. The museum also offers art classes for children, adults, and teachers. In addition, docent-led tours are made available to the guests free of charge. The Saint Louis Art Museum offers a great learning experience and is a must-see for all the art aficionados.
