St. Louis, bounded by the spectacular Mississippi River on the east and by St. Louis County on the north, south, and west, is an independent city in Missouri. Named after King Louis IX of France, St. Louis is best recognized for its rich Victorian past and multiple French and German influences. The city is also known for the 1904 World’s Fair and the 1904 Olympic Games, two major historical events of particular pride to all St. Louisans. Over the years, the city of St.Louis has emerged as a hub for research in biotechnology, medicine, and other sciences.
Nicknamed as the ‘Gateway City’, ‘Gateway to the West’, and the ‘Mound City’, the city of St. Louis is located in the heart of Greater St. Louis, a rambling region of over three million people in both Illinois and Missouri. The city is also one of the major tourist destinations in the state. Some of the most popular museums and attractions in the city include the St. Louis Art Museum, located in Forest Park; the City Museum, featuring a huge outdoor playground and a number of large faux-caves; the Pulitzer Foundation of Arts, situated in the Grand Center; the Eugene Field House, a museum in downtown St.Louis dedicated to the renowned children’s author; the Missouri History Museum; the Fox Theater; and the St. Louis Union Station. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, also known as the ‘New Cathedral’, is one among the several notable churches in the city. St. Louis is also home to the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France- the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral west of the Mississippi River.
The most-frequented tourist attraction in the city is the Jefferson national Expansion Memorial, which comprises of the Gateway Arch and the Museum of Westward Expansion. The Saint Louis Zoological Park, one of the oldest zoos in the nation, is yet another popular attraction in the city. Located in the Forest Park, the St. Louis Zoo is home to an Insectarium and the Prairie Village. The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Downtown St. Louis; St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum; Laclede’s-Landing, a nine-block historical district; the Bellefontaine Cemetery; the Old Courthouse; the original Anheuser-Busch Brewery; and the Wainwright Building are other major landmarks in the city. Forest park and the Missouri Botanical Gardens are, however, the main attractions in the city.
The city of St.Louis is also known for entertainment and performing arts. It is home to the internationally acclaimed Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. The Historic Powell Symphony Hall is the permanent home for this orchestra. The city has also been long associated with jazz, ragtime, and blues music. It is also home to the Muny, the oldest and the largest musical theater in the nation. St. Louis is rich in culture, history, arts, and heritage, and has a lot to offer to its visitors. It is a perfect holiday destination and is a must-see for all those who plant a visit to the state of Missouri.
