Big Hole National Battlefield

big hole national battlefield welcome sign

A place of historic and national importance, the Big Hole National Battlefield is a memorial situated in Montana, created as a tribute to the people involved in the battle between the US Armed forces and the Nez Perce tribes. It was on Aug 8th 1877 at this very location that a U.S. command of soldiers including some volunteers attacked 5 bands of Nez Perce tribes encamped here, putting an end to the over 5 month old wars raging between different groups. The battlefield was added into the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

Spread over 655 acres, the Big Hole National Battlefield brings to life the story of this battle. A museum in the premises which displays various photographs, personal belongings and weapons used, turns out to be educative. Also a video shown to visitors’ gives insight into the history of the battle and the life styles of the tribal people who were involved.

A Visitor Centre located in the Park provides all other information needed and also assists tourists who want to take a self guided tour. The large area of the Big Hole National Battlefield has a few fishing locations and also some attractive picnic spots.
