Charles M. Russell Museum

One of the historic treasures of Great Falls, Montana, is the Charles M. Russell Museum which is a tribute to the local western artist Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) whose works are on display. Initially inaugurated in 1953, the current museum complex holds a large museum, Russell’s residence built in 1900 and a log cabin studio.

Charles Russell was born in St. Louis and since childhood was fascinated by the cowboy life. After initially working for about 11 years as a cowboy, Charles took up painting the Old West themes that he so greatly admired. His works were well-liked due to the unique style and energetic look.

Charles M. Russell Museum holds over 2,000 pieces of art and is the biggest collection of Russell’s work in the world. Additionally on display are personal items and artifacts related to his life. The current day museum does not however restrict its exhibits to Charles M. Russell and displays works of some other renowned western artists and with this the total collection is at approximately 12,000 objects. There are a total of 15 galleries of which five are exclusively dedicated to Charles M. Russell.

Charles M. Russell apart from being the well known artist was also a writer, philosopher, conservationist, environmentalist and historian. The museum has a library which is a wonderful resource to explore the life of this multi-talented celebrity.
