Gallatin County Pioneer Museum

gallatin pioneer museum

The Gallatin County Pioneer Museum is located just about two blocks from downtown Bozeman, Montana and this building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1911 as the county jail building that housed hardened criminals, it initially allotted two rooms to the Gallatin Historical Society in 1979 and subsequent to the complete relocation of prisoners in 1982 it was completely handed over to the museum.

The Gallatin County Pioneer Museum highlights the life of the region in the olden days which the visitors can experience by viewing the various exhibits. The original log cabin of the 1870's is a 12 by 14 feet home that brings out the sense of family togetherness. The museum also has a replica of Fort Ellis that was constructed along the Bozeman Trail, the only one of its kind in the world.

The museum pays tribute to John Bozeman by displaying the life and times of the man who started the Bozeman Trail. There are also vast displays of the items such as tools and guns used by native people who lived in the valley much ahead of 1805 when Lewis and Clark expedition passed through the region.

The library in the premises is extremely informative as it holds a large collection of rare books and over 10,000 pictures. For those interested in picking up a book on the past or a gift, the bookstore is an ideal stopover.
