Going-to-the-Sun Mountain Road

The most used roadway that runs within the heart of the famous Glacier National Park Montana is named as the Going-to-the-Sun Mountain Road. Staring from West Glacier which forms the West entrance of the Park and moving to the East entrance in St. Mary this two lane route is heavily used by tourists visiting the Park. Believed to have got its name from the Going-to-the-Sun Mountain that this road touches upon on its journey, the name is originally linked to a legend of native tribes who earlier inhabited the region.
The steep path on which the road is built is carved from glacial terrain and the tedious construction process of this pathway was completed in the year 1932. It is the only route that crosses the Continental divide at Logan Pass.
Now a National Historic Landmark, Going-to-the-Sun Mountain Road is stretched for over 50 miles (80.5 km) and offers exceptionally scenic sights all through the corridor. Declared as a high risk avalanche area and also being prone to rock slides and snow slides, the route is closed in winters and opens in the spring when a large number of visitors keenly await to traverse the path.
Coming to what this route actually offers, it is one of its kind paths that will take you closest to nature. Alpine vistas, lush green meadows sprinkled with colorful wildflowers all lying at the feet of some towering snow tipped mountains give a spectacular view of the scenic beauty. The unique wildlife forms that are part of this beautiful geographical stretch add spice to the trail.
