Lake McDonald is one of the several stunning lakes that are part of the historic Glacier National Park. Lake McDonald is not only the largest of them all but also the most attractive and popular spot within the park. Located amidst dense forest regions and bordered by massive mountains, this ten mile long lake is over a mile in width and is the ideal place for outdoor recreational activities. Shore fishing, camping, kayaking, boating and hiking are some popular entertainment avenues.
The scenic beauty of the place is at its peak during sunny mornings or moonlit nights when the reflection of the huge ice capped mountains are visible in the crystal clear lake waters. Even otherwise the clouds floating on the blue skies perfectly complement the sparkling waters surrounded by trees and mountains. Believed to have been created about 10,000 years ago during the last ice age, by the meting glaciers, the lake has a constant inflow of water from snowmelt of the greater McDonald Creek.
The rising popularity of Lake McDonald has seen several hotels and hospitality services mushrooming around the region and that surely makes it the most developed part of the Glacier National Park. Lake McDonald is easy to access via the much admired Going-to-the-Sun Road as it runs extremely close to the southern part of the lake.
