Built in the honor of Meriwether Lewis and his associate Capt. William Clark, theLewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center is the perfect tribute to the adventurous spirit of these two gentlemen who trekked from St. Louis to the Pacific from 1804 to 1806.
Located in Great Falls, Montana along the banks of Missouri river this two-storey and 5500 square feet centre is a beautiful collection of exhibits that include maps and specimens related to the two year long expedition. A large compass at the centre of the entrance lobby is an interesting beginning to the discovery of the treasures that lie ahead.
Events that triggered the exploration starting from the purchase of Louisiana Territory by President Jefferson fromNapoleon and the interest of the President to track the path from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean are all detailed here. Subsequently the task was assigned to Meriwether Lewis, the personal secretary to the President and Captain William Clark and their men. Exhibits include some of the original relics that the expedition team had sent to the President including a hand-drawn map of their path from St. Louis to the current North Dakota. Replicas of some unusual animals and plants discovered along the route are also on display. The Center also projects with great accuracy and detail the 20 major events during the journey that fashioned the results of the exploration. There is also an authentic recreation of the entire trail where visitors can actually participate and feel the experience.
The Center’s Portage Cache store is the perfect place to pick up gifts and books related to the Lewis and Clark experiences.
