Popularly called as the Garden City, Missoula is indeed a paradise. Located to the west of Montana State this beautiful city covered with greenery is actually based in a deep valley bordered by towering mountains and dense forests. Three major rivers flow through its land adding to the attractiveness and also providing the prefect recreational spots for water sport lovers.
The Salish tribe is said to be the early inhabitants of Missoula and were noticed by the famed Lewis and Clark expedition when it touched this part in the year 1805. However, it was only in 1860 that permanent settlements came in with the entry of C. P. Higgins and Francis Worden who set up a trading post for travelers.
Missoula is home to the much acclaimed University of Missoula located on the Clark Fork Riverbed. Spread over a 200 acre campus and with over 12,000 students in its fold, this University is one of the best places to study in the USA.
Places of interest in Missoula are many. There are celebrated museums such as Art Museum of Missoula, Museum of Art & Culture and the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. The largest smokejumper base, run by the US Forest Services which holds The Smokejumper Visitor Center is a much visited destination. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Wildlife Visitor Center, Rattlesnake Wilderness and Rattlesnake National Recreation Area are other popular tourist attractions.
Shopping is a delight in the historic and wonderful Downtown Missoula with its ancient structures and a wide range of inimitable galleries, shops and eateries.
