The Montana State Capitol is a grand structure made of sandstone that cost around $485,000 in the year 1902 when it was completed. Designed by Iowa based architects, Charles E. Bell and John H. Kent who moved into Helena for working on the Capitol building, it is a magnificent creation with a copper covered dome standing about 165 feet tall and holding a bronze Lady Liberty statue on top. The architecture is inclined towards the Neoclassic Greek fashion. A renovation in 1912 saw the addition of two wings made of Montana granite at an estimated cost of $500,000.
Today the Capitol houses the Montana State Legislature during legislative sessions and also the offices of the Governor, Secretary of State, Lt. Governor and the Legislative Branch.
The tours usually begin at the rotunda and when one steps under the huge dome, a great deal of intricate designs catch your eye. Once inside the capitol, one is bound to be struck by the grandeur of the interiors. The dark wood used inside compliments the numerous paintings depicting significant moments in the history of Montana and adds a touch of class. However the massive "Lewis and Clark Meeting the Indians at Ross Hole," painting takes centre stage. Statues of eminent contributors to Montana’s past are put up at noticeable locations.
For visitors interested in a self-guided tour, booklets are provided at the information desk located on the first floor of the Capitol. The tour guides have a great deal of information about the edifice and answer queries in no time. For anyone not so keen on history, architecture or art, the green lawns are a perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of the site.
