Butte is home to one of the most renowned mining museums of our times, the World Museum of Mining, built in the year 1963. Covering an area of 44 acres (178061 Sq.Meters), the Museum has the reputation of being one of the very few museums that were built on actual mines – here the once flourishing Orphan Girl Mine. Put up entirely from funds raised through voluntary donations of the Butte residents who wanted to conserve their mining practices and traditions, it offers an exact picture of the tools and techniques in the mining world since the olden days to the present day. Families enjoy the near 20 minute ride on three car train, The Orphan Girl Express, around the ground and learn about the history of the region.
World Museum of Mining is also home to the replica of the 1899 mining camp, inclusive of boardwalks and cobblestone streets. There are also several shops having antiques from the same period which can be easily viewed when while strolling along the ancient boardwalks. Visitors can have a close look at more than fifty recreated buildings, numerous artifacts and several crucial exhibits within the mine yard. Within the museum premises, at the Hardrock Mining Building, one will come across the photo exhibition of the early day mining. With a collection of over 5000 pictures mostly depicting life in Butte and the mining activity all displayed captivatingly, it surely takes you back in time. People can also purchase the replicas of these pictures printed in black and white.
For experiencing the history of the mining town and getting a first hand feel of the life of a mining community - the World Museum of Mining is a must-visit.
