Yellowstone Art GalleryThe Yellowstone Art Museum situated in Billings, Montana is a significant landmark, hosting some of the most exclusive contemporary and historic visual arts collection in the entire state. Inaugurated in 1964 in the same premises as that of the historic Yellowstone County Jail, the center was bestowed with the prestigious Governor's Award for Service to the Arts in 1995. The jail stands in the museum grounds till date but as an exhibit. Though the museum was functional in 1964, the process of building up its permanent display collection acquired momentum in 1984, when private donations and a major grant from the Montana Coal Tax Fund resulted in the acquisition of some important contemporary art works from the region. A popular assortment named “The Montana Collection” is termed as a living artistic heritage on account of its ancient western art works. A significant portion of the comprehensive permanent collection is the memorabilia and numerous paintings and drawings contributed by the noted cowboy illustrator, Will James. Other noted artists whose works are on display include J.H. Sharp and Charles M. Russell. For those who want to pick up something memorable related to The Yellowstone Art Museum, the Museum Store has on its shelves a wide range of gifts and memorabilia highlighting the beauty of the exhibits. With an aim to educate students about art and create awareness about the great artists of the region, The Yellowstone Art Museum conducts special programs for students across the region.
