Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum, situated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, is a state park, mansion, and an arboretum, encompassing nearly 72 acres (0.29 sq-km) of wooded rolling hills. The Mansion is a magnificent 52-room neocolonial house constructed in 1855 for Julius Sterling Morton, Secretary of Agriculture in the 1890s and the founder of Arbor Day. The house was renovated several times and in later years, served as a summer home for Joy Morton, founder of Morton Salt Company. The Mansion is known for its Empire and Victorian furnishings and the elegant sun parlor featuring a fine Tiffany skylight with grape wreath design.
At present, this historic mansion operates as a museum and holds several items pertaining to the early history of Nebraska, Nebraska City, and the Otoe County. The nearby building features steam driven vehicles, gasoline driven vehicles, fire wagons, and early carriages. The Arbor Lodge is surrounded by over 270 varieties of trees and shrubs, imported from all over the world by J. S. Morton in order to break up the monotony of the Great Plains. The State Park features at least 10 state-champion trees, apple orchards, gardens, and acres of maples, oaks, pines, and chestnuts.
The specimen trees in the Park are specially labeled with engraved bronze plates. The apple orchards at the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park has various apple varieties, including Jonathans, Winesaps, Jonadels, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious. The park is also home to over 200 distinct varieties of lilacs. Other attractions at the Park include an Italian terraced garden, a walking trail lined with trees planted by Morton, and a whispering bench.
