Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, situated 2 miles (3 km) to the west of North Platte, Nebraska, is a living history park dedicated to Col. William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, an Indian scout, a noted adventurer, and showman. This Park is home to Cody’s actual house known as the Scout’s Rest Ranch. Cody had built this house in this region during the heyday of his famous Wild West Show, in 1866. He owned over 4,000 acres (16 sq. km.) on the banks of the North Platte River. Today, the Park features 25 acres (10 hectares) of the original ranch, including the barn and the house. The property also includes a number of other historical exhibits.
Buffalo Bill's Ranch was designated as a state historical park in the year 1965, after which the house and barn were restored, and a wealth of Cody’s memorabilia was acquired and put on display. Cody’s magnificent Victorian Mansion has 18 rooms, complete with costumes, photos, authentic furniture, playbills, and other memorabilia. A major landmark nearby is the Buffalo Bill State Recreation Area, which provides great opportunities for camping along the Platte River. The recreation area also offers 50 Amp electrical campsites, picnic tables, fire rings, hiking trails, and many other facilities for fishing. Guided tours of the State Historical Park are also made available to the tourists. The famous World War II North Platte Canteen, housed in the Lincoln County Historical Museum, is located just next to the Buffalo Bill Ranch.
