Chadron

Chadron, situated in the Dawes County, Nebraska, was established in 1884, when the Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad passed through this region from Omaha en route to Wyoming. The city was formerly named as O`Linn in honor of its founder Fannie O`Linn. The city was later named as Chadron for Louis Chartran, a fur trapper who established a trading post on Bordeaux Creek, in 1841. Charles Henry King was one among the founders of this town.
Over the years, Chadron has become a place of tourist interest. The Museum of Fur Trade in the City is the largest of its kind in the United States, attracting thousands of visitors annually. Besides, the City also hosts a community celebration, the “Fur Trade Days”, every year. This event is held to commemorate Chadron’s origins as a hide and fur trading post for the French in the 1800s. Chadron is also home to the Chadron State College, established in 1911. Other major tourist attractions in and around the city include the Fort Robinson State Park and the Chadron State Park.
Chadron and its surrounding areas are an integral part of the folklore of the Old West. The historic Blaine Hotel is the site where the 1000-mile (1600-km) Chadron to Chicago Horse Race began. The scenic Bordeaux region of the Pine Ridge Area and the Dinner Train are very popular with the tourists. The City is also well known for its local cuisine and nightlife.
Besides, the city’s unique shopping and a friendly atmosphere are sure to please every visitor. The famous golf fields in the city are the sites where pioneers, buffalo, and other famous Native Americans, such as “Crazy Horse”, once wandered. The favorite tourist activities in the city include fishing, hunting, and camping. The quaint city of Chadron is rich in history, culture, and heritage, and is well-worth visiting.
