Chimney Rock

chimney rock

Chimney Rock is the greatest of all the natural landmarks on the Oregon Trail. This popular, prominent geological formation in situated near present-day Bayard, in Morrill County, Nebraska. It rises 475 feet (145 m) above the surrounding North Platte River, with its summit at an elevation of 4226 ft (1288 m) above sea level. The spectacular Chimney Rock can be viewed for several miles from the east, along U. S. Route 26. At present, it is administered by the National Park Service in cooperation with the Nebraska State Historical Society. Situated 1 ½ miles (2.4 km) south of the State Road 92 on Chimney Rock Road, Chimney Rock has been designated as a National Historic Site.

Chimney Rock, the most celebrated landmark on the pioneer trunk lines to the west, was the primary setting for pony express, telegraph, and stage stations during the 19th century. A geologic study carried out in 1895 suggests that the slender column above the cone was about three times higher than it is now, and that it is worn out due to tough erosion over the past hundred years. Several paintings and drawings from the 1840s and 1850s still exist on the column of the rock. The visitor facilities are maintained at the site by the Nebraska State Historical Society. A small parking lot and an extensive collection of maps, artifacts, brochures, and drawings are offered by the Visitor Center. Besides, the center also maintains an excellent walk-out observing patio.
