The Durham Western Heritage Museum, situated in Omaha, Nebraska, is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. It aims at collecting, interpreting, preserving, and exhibiting historical and cultural artifacts pertaining to the development and history of the western regions of the nation. Established in 1931 by the Union Pacific Railroad, the Museum was formerly known as the Union Station. The Durham Western Heritage Museum is considered to be one of the unique treasures of Omaha and is best known for its magnificent Art Deco architecture. This historic train station is still decorated with the bronze and copper accents.
The Museum features more than 65, 000 square feet (6038.5 square meters) of exhibits, which provide an exquisite look at Omaha’s history. The most impressive exhibits at the Museum include the Bryon Reed Coin and Document Collection, restored Pullman train cars, an earth lodge, a teepee, and the Trans-Mississippi Exposition Gallery. A major attraction at the Museum is a wonderful replica of the 1898 Exposition “Arch of the States’ entry gate, housed in the Trans-Mississippi Exposition Gallery. Besides, the Museum also holds a number of temporary exhibits, which teach the visitors about the city’s notable citizens, neighborhoods, and historical sites.
The Hitchcock Gift Shop at the Durham Western Heritage Museum is full of keepsakes and knick-knacks, which will remind the visitors of their visit to the historic Union Station. The gift shop features gift items such as jewelry, educational toys, clothing, Nebraska book, train books, souvenirs, mug, denim shirts, etc. The Museum is a great learning experience and must not be missed during your stay at Omaha.
