Fort Robinson State Park

buttes in fort robinson state park

Fort Robinson State Park, situated to the west of Crawford, is the largest and the most historic state park in Nebraska. It was established in 1874 as an Indian Agency protective post and guarded the Red Cloud Agency until 1877. This fort was also the site of the death of Crazy Horse, the victor in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and the 1879 Cheyenne Outbreak. Over the years, the historic outpost served as a POW camp and beef research station, K-9 dog training center, and a cavalry remount station.

Today, Fort Robinson is a premier state park, featuring 22, 000 acres (89.1 sq-km) of compelling old west history, exquisite Pine Ridge scenery, several fun-time activities, park’s own longhorn and buffalo herds, excellent lodging, and scenic camping. In short, history from all eras is combined with a wide variety of recreational activities at the park. The main activities in the Park include fishing at the ponds in the area; horseback riding; hiking in the Pine Ridge area; stagecoach rides; jeep rides; and a ride on the Tour Train.

A museum and a number of reconstructed historic buildings are operated in the area by the State Historical Society in order to offer a glimpse into the colorful history of the Fort. The Trailside Museum, operated by the University of Nebraska, interprets the natural history and geology of the region. Other places of tourist interest in the Park include the Fort Robinson Restaurant; the Sutlar’s Store in the Activities Center; and the shady campground. The Campground offers group camping with equestrian facilities. Besides, showers, water, modern restrooms, dump station, shelters, and picnic tables are also provided to the visitors.
