The Joslyn Art Museum, situated in Omaha, Nebraska, is the most distinguished and the largest fine arts museum in the state. In fact, it is the only museum in Nebraska with an extensive permanent art collection. This collection comprises of works from the distant past to the present day, with more emphasis on the 19th and 20th century American and European art. The major highlights of this collection include works by Thomas Hart Benton, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Lorenzo di Credi, and Albert Bierstadt. Besides, the Museum also features the work of American masters such as Dale Chihuly, Grant Wood, George Segal, and Jackson Pollock.
The Joslyn Art Museum is best known for its collection of art of the American West and the internationally acclaimed collection of Karl Bodmer’s prints and watercolors. The latter illustrates the Swiss artist Bodmer’s journey to the Missouri River frontier with the German Prince, in 1832-34. Other permanent collections at the Museum include an outstanding collection of Greek pottery; 16th and 17th century works by Titian and El Greco; traditional works of the Native Americans; and a wide range of 20th century sculpture and paintings by artists such as Henri Matisse, Stuart David, and Deborah Butterfield. Besides the museum’s permanent collection, several other special exhibitions are presented annually, offering a large variety of art to the visitors. The Museum also hosts year-round educational lectures by national and international scholars, musical performances, and art classes for all age groups.
The Museum was established in 1911 by Sarah H. Joslyn and was named in honor of her husband, George A. Joslyn. It was formally opened to the public in 1931, after which it served as a premier center for visual arts. Designed by John and Alan Mc Donald, the Joslyn Art Museum building is a magnificent Art Deco structure. It is made of Georgia Pink marble, with over 38 different marbles in its interior. The decorative panels on the exterior represent the original Native American inhabitants and the later European explorers. The inscriptions carved on the Museum building were written by H. B. Alexander. The Museum also houses a 1, 000-seat concert hall, education technology gallery, library, café, a lecture hall, an elegant gift shop, and a fountain court.
