Lake McConnaughy State Recreation Area, situated 8 miles (13 sq-km) northeast of Ogallala, Nebraska, is best known for its outdoor recreational activities. Managed by the Nebraska Games and Parks Commission, McConnaughy is a favorite with most Nebraskans and the residents of the neighboring states. The waters and the white sand beaches in the area offer excellent opportunities for fishing and boating. Other popular tourist activities in the area include camping, sail boating, wind surfing, swimming, water skiing, picnicking, scuba diving, hunting, and ice boating.
Lake McConnaughy is the largest lake in Nebraska. It measures nearly 22 miles (37 km) in length, 3 miles (5 skm) in width, and 35,000 acres (140 sq. km.) in area. The primary drawing card at Big Mac has always been fishing. Game fish vary from everyday catfish to the sporty rainbow trout. However, walleye, white bass, and striped bass are prized most highly by the local angler. The Recreation Area is home to 313 species of birds, including migrating water birds such as common mergansers and western grebes. Other birds that can be spotted in the area include the snowy plovers, Baird’s sandpipers, whimbrels, whooping cranes, and bald eagles. Lake McConnaughy State Recreation Area is a great place to relax and is not worth missing.
