Mormon Trail Center

mormon trail center sign

The Mormon Trail Center, situated in Omaha, Nebraska, memorializes the ‘Winter Quarters’, where several members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took shelter on their way to the Salt Lake Valley. The present-day Mormon Trail Center was opened to the public in April 1997. This Center is dedicated to the tribulations and trials of the early pioneers. The Center offers an opportunity to watch an audiovisual presentation on the pioneer life, explore an authentic pioneer cabin, and visit the famous Mormon Pioneer Cemetery.

The Cemetery, situated across the street, is a tour in itself. Most of the graves in this cemetery are from the Winter Quarters era. The main attraction in the cemetery is the large bronze sculpture of a couple burying their infant child. This wonderful sculpture by Avard Fairbanks stands at the north end of the cemetery.

Another impressive feature of the Mormon Trail Center is the Winter Quarter Temple, which was established in April, 2001. This temple attracted more than 61, 000 people in less than two weeks. The Center also provides tours of the local area history. The guided tour begins with a short film that narrates the entire story in a very interesting way. In the guided tours, visitors can view the ox drawn covered wagon, many artifacts of that era, a primitive log cabin, and hand-carts. Mormon Trail Center offers a unique experience and is a “must-see” during your stay at Omaha, Nebraska.
